The 2022 Private Equity Benchmark Report for 2022 has been published.

Among key findings for Growth Capital funds, i.e., investing in mature companies that are to expand and improve operations or enter into new markets, are:

  • 42 ‘new’ European Growth Capital Funds were raised in 2022, with a total capitalization of EUR 14.5 billion.
  • IRR of European Growth Capital funds generated since inception were 15.34%, outperforming the MSCI Europe with returns of 6.03% and S&P Europe SmallCap index with returns of 8.37%.
  • European Growth Capital funds lag behind North American peers by 689 basis points but beat funds from the Rest of the World by 515 basis points.

Among key findings for Venture Capital funds, i.e., investing in young, innovative companies that are about to launch, are in early development or expansion of the business, are:

  • 112 ‘new’ European Venture Capital funds were raised in 2022, with a total capitalization of EUR 15.4 billion.
  • IRR of European Venture Capital funds generated since inception were 12.13%, outperforming the MSCI Europe which returned 7.67%.
  • European Venture Capital funds lag behind North American peers which delivered an 16.65% IRR.
